Family in Oppenheimer
I watched Oppenheimer over the summer and it has since become one of my favorite movies. Not only was the cinematography fantastic, but the storytelling was amazing. The movie was able to show the feelings of Oppenheimer incredibly well throughout the making and detonation of the atomic bomb, and even in the hearing to see if he was guilty of treason. One common aspect throughout the entire movie was the idea of his family. His wife played an integral role in the hearing near the end of the movie in proving Oppenheimer’s innocence even after figuring out that he had cheated on her while he was working on the bomb. This is an incredible showcase of family. She may have been extremely upset upon learning this, but when it came to be her turn to speak she still defended him however she could. She was given the opportunity to ruin his life forever by calling him a communist and claiming that he had committed treason against the country, but she decided to help him.
Not only was their family found with his wife, there was also his chosen family of friends and colleagues that he worked with. While there were many arguments about whose ideas were good and whether or not they should be going through with this in the first place, I think that they were a family. It’s not easy to create a weapon that would change the course of the world forever, but that group of scientists stuck together to work out every problem they had to create a device that would end the second world war. They were a family, an incredibly dysfunctional family, but still a family
