Emma Review
I came into Emma thinking that I was not going to like it very much, so far I can not really tell, partially because it is fairly confusing to read. The first chapter itself had a lot going on, but it took a lot to understand what exactly it was saying to the reader. Now that I understand - or at least partially understand - the story is intriguing but also just upsetting. Emma is my least favorite kind of person - rich and manipulative. I say that only half-jokingly. So far she is really just a pretentious girl who thinks she knows best and will have it her way or no way at all. Obviously, this is only my interpretation for the first volume of the book, so there is plenty of time for a change in perspective, but I do not have high hopes with what I’ve heard about the book. I am going to try and keep an open mind throughout the rest of my reading, but it is going to be hard to empathize with someone who manipulates others for the benefit of herself - or for no benefit at all. Other than my deep hatred towards Emma right now, the book is entertaining to discuss. I feel that I have a better time discussing the book with classmates instead of the actual reading. It is interesting to hear others' perspectives on situations in the story, and a lot of the time it helps me understand what is happening with the plot so far. Overall, I find the book difficult to follow, upsetting to read, and fun to discuss.
Emma is not super likeable, ha.
