The Research Process

  The topic I chose for my research paper is how overbearing religious parents can affect their children, mainly focusing on rebellion in the form of satanism and how parents might find satanism in completely unrelated activities.  The occult and everything related to it is extremely fascinating to me, and I have always wondered how people got to the conclusion that things like dungeons and dragons and metal music promote satanism and are a medium to convert kids.  It has been incredibly easy to find sources that explore the ideas of satanism and it was not too difficult to find sources diving into why some hobbies are labeled as dangerous and satanic.  The most difficult part is finding articles connecting extreme religious beliefs in a family and Satanism or what people believe to be evil.  Fortunately, I think I have a good variety of sources that will allow me to make conclusions on my own about how all of these topics are related.

The most intriguing part of this assignment so far is one of the sources I found which is an episode titled “Devil Worship: Exposing Satan’s Underground” by Geraldo Rivera from 1988.  Watching this show doesn’t feel real.  The intro is very stereotypical of an old show, but the interviews and cases that Rivera got for the show are wild.  I haven’t fact-checked any of the information from what I have seen so far, but even still it’s crazy to hear what they have to say about the incidents and satanism in general.
